Modestine Fain Deacon
Serving Care Unit, San Jose #1, Modestine RN,MSN,MA, has been a faithful member of SBCC for several years along with her husband. She currently serves as a Deacon serving San Care Unit #1.
Over the past 30 years Modestine has committed herself to improving the healthcare of her community especially the African American and other underserved communities. Her experience as an administrator for various hospitals has given her the skills needed to manage a diverse group of staff and projects. Her educational preparation- a Master of Science degree from St. Xavier University in Chicago, A Master of Arts degree in education from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago have prepared her for the various roles of teacher, nurse, mentor, manager, and leader.
As an administrator she has managed a diverse staff, managed projects and facilitated program development. She has 24 hour responsibility for a 30 bed unit and manages 80 people and a budget of 20 million dollars.
In her role as a surveyor for the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, she helps other rehab facilities around the nation meet standards of care for the provision of services.
As a faculty member of the University of Phoenix she has taught nursing students on both the graduate and undergraduate levels and tried to instill in them all the things she has learned about advocacy, compassion and having a caring attitude.
Her role as mentor, teacher and advocate carries over into her personal life where she is active in her church's Health and Wholeness Ministry and in the local chapter of the National Black Nurses Association. In these two organizations she has been active in community health fairs, mentoring grammar and high school students and nursing students, community health screening programs and fundraising for scholarships for nursing students.
